Navy Times article

I shared credit for one story in

Navy Times

It was written in the 1980s, when the yen in Japan started at 360 to the dollar and, by 1987, had risen to 105 to the dollar. As the military personnel (and US civil service personnel) were paid in dollars, this dropped the value of a dollar from $1.00 to $0.27.

Similar problems emerged in Europe, which had a much larger U.S. military presence. Military divorces skyrocketed, as did military bankruptcies. The news story was a snapshot look at the crisis.

Because of the poor condition of the original newsprint copy, several scans were made and stitched together, then run through an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) process. This took much longer than most of the publications.
