Sir William St. Clair, last St. Clair Prince of Orkney, founded what was supposed to be the Collegiate Chapel of St. Mathew [sic] in 1446. Collegiate chapels were unusual in that they were intended to spread both intellectual as well as religious knowledge. The village of Roslin was built to house the workers St. Clair brought in to build the chapel. Exactly what prompted St. Clair to build a chapel so far from the Orkneys is unknown, but St. Clair was supposedly a member of the Knights Templar, and for 500 years there has been speculation that he had some mystical secret purpose. © 2004 Lawrence I.
