Inside Roslyn Chapel you are confronted with an overwhelming wealth of detail. Virtually every surface is covered with ornate stone carvings, ranging from pre-Christian religious and mystical symbols to Masonic and Knights Templar symbols to scenes and symbols from the Old Testament, the New Testament, and subsequent Christian history. Political and religious quarrels caused the chapel to be closed for services between 1592 and 1862, when it was rededicated. The stained glass windows were added in stages starting in the 19th century. © 2004 Lawrence I. Charters |
