The Mysterious Woman in a Red Coat at Roslyn Chapel, Roslin, south of Edinburgh. (Yes, the chapel and the village name are spelled differently.) While Roslyn Chapel has long been famous, the recent success of the novel "The Da Vinci Code" has elevated it to cult status, marred somewhat by the difficulty in finding the chapel, or parking anywhere near it. The steel structure, no part of which touches the building, was erected in 1997 as a temporary measure to protect the building from the elements; an effort is now underway to raise the £2,000,000 necessary to repair the roof. While it isn't obvious, this relatively small chapel has flying buttresses, normally associated with cathedrals many times its size. © 2004 Lawrence I. Charters
