George Orwell once called Sheffield the "ugliest town in the world." It has a long history as an iron and steel center; even Chaucer notes in The Reeve's Tale a miller with a Sheffield knife in his hose: "A Sheffeld thwitel baar he in his hose." This dragon sculpture, formed of Sheffield cutlery, is on display in a complex of art galleries next to the Sheffield Winter Garden. © 2005 Lawrence I. Charters |
