Located between Brampton and Haltwhistle, Birdoswald Roman Fort was a major Roman military fortification, with granaries, livestock pens, stone houses, and towers within its 5.5 acres. These sheep are not among the original inhabitants. The stretch of Hadrian's Wall used in the film "King Arthur" was built in Ireland, but it was patterned in part after Birdoswald, which is believed to be near the site of Arthur's last battle. © 2004 Lawrence I.
