Turf and stone walls at Culloden greatly hindered the Jacobites. The Highlanders were famed for their ferocity in battle, when they would sweep down hillsides and use their speed and mobility to close with the enemy in hand to hand fighting. These turf and stone walls hemmed the Highlanders in and, combined with the dense vegetation, turned their charge into a slow, agonizing struggle through the moor. © 2004 Lawrence I. Charters
