Statue of Jonathan Wainwright, on the campus of the Walla Walla Veteran's Hospital. Wainwright, after being placed in an impossible tactical position in the Philippines by Gen. Douglas MacArthur, was ordered to fight to the death. After running out of supplies, Wainwright surrendered. When he was released from a Japanese prisoner of war camp, MacArthur lobbied that Wainwright be court martialed; instead, Congress awarded him a Medal of Honor. Photo by Lawrence I. Charters. |
