While the Master Mason was away, his apprentice finished carving the other pillar, now known as the Apprentice Pillar. When the master mason returned, he was so jealous of the work done by the apprentice that he killed him. The apprentice, according to legend, was guided in his carving by a dream. Leading to the pillar is an arch which has, in Latin, the inscription, "Wine is strong a King is stronger, women are stronger still but truth conquers all," from the book of Esdras (Ezra). Among the elements on the pillar is an image of St. Matthew and, around the base, seven interlocking dragons. © 2004 Lawrence I. Charters |
