Forth Railroad Bridge, over the Firth of Forth. This one and a half mile long bridge, finished in 1890, was the largest steel structure in the world when it was completed, using 54,000 tons of steel. Each of the tubes used in the cantilever design is large enough for an entire London subway train to drive through without touching the sides. © 2004 Lawrence I. Charters |
