Map of the Culloden battlefield. During the battle, 5,000 Jacobite troops, composed of Highlanders, a few Irish, some French, and some cavalry, lined up with some small artillery pieces 1200 feet from 9,000 government redcoats, with strong artillery support. As Bonnie Prince Charlie waited for the government troops to do something, with a strong wind blowing sleet into the face of his troops, the Duke of Cumberland attacked with his artillery, slaughtering the Highlanders. Eventually the Prince ordered a charge, over terrible ground that slowed his troops, and the Jacobites suffered greatly as the artillery continued to take its toll and the redcoat regiments fired into the attackers. © 2004 Lawrence I.
