| Culloden, east of Inverness, saw the death of Scottish separatism on April 16, 1746. While England and Scotland were united under the Scottish King James VI, who became James I of England, only the monarchy was united; the governments were not for some time. After William of Orange was crowned King, some Scots pushed hard to break the uniion, and were known as Jacobites. At Culloden, those dreams were utterly destroyed. This cairn, in the middle of the graveyard where the clans were buried, brought the Jacobite rebellion -- begun in 1689 -- to a close. © 2004 Lawrence I. Charters |
