Castle Urquhart is a huge ruin, once one of Scotland's largest castles and the inspiration for many movie sets. The oldest parts of the castle date to around 1230, when King Alexander II built up the area to keep the feisty locals in line. The castle was taken by the English under Edward I in 1297, then retaken by the Scots. The Scottish crown and the unruly Clan Macdonald then fought over the castle for 150 years. © 2004 Lawrence I.
