East end of Glen Coe. Glen Coe, famed for its beauty, is bordered by high ridges, forming a natural east-west transportation route through the Highlands. For this reason, it has long been a battleground, too. The most famous is probably the Glen Coe Massacre of Feb. 1, 1692, when a troop of government red coats killed 38 mostly unarmed men, women and children to set an "example" of obedience to the King. © 2004 Lawrence I.
