Mary Israel Boarding House, New Albany, Indiana
This building is the former Mary Israel Boarding House in New Albany, Indiana. On July 22, 1862, a report in the New Albany Ledger that two white men had been shot by a black man touched off 30 hours of rioting in New Albany. One black was beaten to death, and mobs searched for and beat several others. When the crowd reached Israel House and demanded that Mary Israel turn over a black man who was staying there, Mary Israel refused and barricaded the doors. The boarding house and hotel had played host to Zachary Taylor, Martin Van Buren, Andrew Jackson, Daniel Webster, and other notables over the years, and Mary Israel's refusal effectively ended the riot. 1/2500 sec at f / 2.4 4.12 mm iPhone 5 Lawrence I.
