Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, 65 miles west
of Washington, DC, encompasses much of the village of Harpers Ferry, West
Virginia. It is strategically located at the confluence of the Potomac
and Shenandoah Rivers, and has played a major role in the exploration of
the U.S., the Civil War, and the civil rights movement. This gentleman
is discussing one of the many battles fought for Harpers Ferry during the
American Civil War. Photo © 2006 Lawrence I. Charters
