Monument to Pennsylvania Zouaves, Little Round Top, Gettysburg. The odd uniforms were inspired by North African troops incorporated into the French colonial army; their distinctive uniform, and their reputation for ferocity, were much admired, especially after trilling stories on French Zouaves in the Crimean War. The uniforms were completely inappropriate for North America, but quite a few volunteer units in the Union and Confederate armies adopted the uniforms. © 2006 Lawrence I. Charters |
