These crude stone walls, barely a foot high, were used
by Union Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain as he commanded the 20th Maine
Volunteer Infantry Regiment in defending Little Round Top, the critical
battle of Gettysburg. Threatened by a far larger Confederate force that
was close to overwhelming his unit and flanking the Union line, Chamberlain
-- his troops almost out of ammunition -- ordered his men to fix bayonets
and charge the Confederates. The Confederates, startled and confused, retreated,
ending the attack. © 2006 Lawrence I. Charters
