Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Montier, better known as
the Marquis de Lafayette, purchased a ship at age 20 and, together
with other young idiot idealists, sailed to America to fight in the
Revolution. Schooled in classic European warfare, he trained Amercian
troops and
fought with distinction in a number of battles. After the Revolution,
he returned to France, attempted to reform the monarchy, and was forced
to flee the country. Returning in 1800, he survived Napoleon, and help
establish a constitutional monarchy in 1830.
