These wooden fences are constructed without using any nails or other metal, an important consideration in the 19th century. The sunken road between the two fences was the site of some of the deadliest fighting of the Battle of Antietam; at various times during the battle, troops from both sides used the sunken road for protection, only to find themselves trapped when the other side advanced.
