Founded as a royal hunting lodge a thousand years ago, Castle Glamis, north of Dundee, is seat of the Earl of Strathmore. King Malcolm II died at the lodge in 1034 after being wounded in battle. The formal castle was begun in 1400 by the second Sir John Lyon. Centuries later in 1923, Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon married Prince Albert, Duke of York. She became Queen Consort when Prince Albert was crowned King George VI in 1936. Their daughter, Princess Elizabeth (born 1926) now reigns as Queen Elizabeth II. "Queen Mum" Elizabeth died in 2002, at 101 years of age. © 2004 Lawrence I. Charters
