Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben came to America not out of love of the cause but because he was broke. A former member of the Prussian General Staff, he had one thing Washington, and Washington's army, lacked: formal training. With no skill in English (he communicated with American officers in French and German) he created "model" companies in the American army, drilled them in fire and maneuver, and was rewarded with this wonderful monument in Lafayette Park.
