President Andrew Jackson, one of the more controversial presidents, managed at one time or another to alienate most of his friends and enemies. But his support for the Union was strong, and his rejection of "nullification," the concept that states could ignore federal statutes they didn't like, earned him a reputation as a defender of the Union, and pride of place in front of the White House.
