Commodore John Barry is considered the founder of the US Navy. Born, as was John Paul Jones, in Ireland, the strapping 6 foot 4 inch Barry was a merchant in Philadelphia, with a small fleet of ships, when hostilities with Britain began. He offered his services to the new nation, and fought at Trenton and Princeton while awaiting a suitable warship. Once at sea, he captured or destroyed over 20 British ships, and fought the last sea battle of the Revolution.
